HAPPY (RIDICULOUS) WEEKEND

I think being called ridiculous might be one of my most favorite compliments. Here in Seattle, it's easy to be called ridiculous for things like... oh, I don't know - wearing a dress out to a casual dinner on a Tuesday night. Or purchasing a gold sign that says 'holla' for your traditional apartment (ahem).

But my god would life would be boring without those things. The worst thing I can imagine is looking like everyone else. And yet, I feel like we are so often trying to be like others, keep up with others or compete with others. And, do you know what those others who you admire and who are succeeding are doing? Being themselves.
So here's to a ridiculous weekend, my dears. Make this one count. Dare to wear feathers and bright lipstick. Buy something your husband will hate because it's impractical and you love it. Put a plastic pink flamingo in your yard if you think they're cool (because they are) and tell your neighbors to bugger off.
It's not about being different just to be different. Or to get attention. (That was Jr. High, remember?) It's about trusting your gut, and not giving a sh*t what the others say (unless they say you look like a whore, and then you should probably go change). It's about remembering why people who like you like you.

I say all of this because I've been going through a lot of things lately where I've asked, is this true to me? Or, is this true to coco+kelley? One of the most empowering things I did this year was to decorate my own space just for me. And you know what? I don't regret a single decision. Sure, there will be tweaks and changes along the way, but I love everything about it.

I've also been working on a complete redesign of this site (don't worry - it's going to be fresh and clean and better than ever) and every time I've added or subtracted something I've questioned it. But in the end, my gut always wins out.

This weekend? I'm cleaning out my wardrobe and getting rid of boring and blah to make room for quality and beauty and yes, maybe even some feathers.

So, go have a beautiful, ridiculous weekend my friends. And enjoy it!

Excellent post. I got married a few months ago (after having lived happily single for 60 years) and haven't had a private moment in three months. I truly love being married, but I loved the silence of my own space, too, and this will be my first weekend to enjoy by myself while my hubby goes off to enjoy a weekend retreat with some of his buddies. Yay! What to do...where to start???

  10. Great post. I've been sorting and cleaning things out. Stuff that was outrageous a while ago is boring now. Time for it to go. Also, the older I get, the more defined my "style" so I can do without stuff I thought was me but as life evolves...not so much. Have a delightful weekend my dear.

  17. Nice Marylin quote. And by the way, that's the way it should be. Even when my friends tell me that I'm looking like a whore, I don't go home and change. I don't give a sh*t anyway.
    All the best

  19. What an inspiring post Cassandra. Love your authenticity. It's part of the reasons I love and follow your blog. Not only do you have great tastee but you also have substance and sometimes in the world of fashion and home decor, that can be hard to find. Keep up the great work!

  22. Oh my goodness, Cass, I am so glad someone else out there can verbalize these sentiments. For my rehearsal dinner, I wore stiletto mules with a giant red suede bow on the toe that was embellished with two gold mermaids. I loved them and, bonus, they were a gift from my mommy! I came downstairs ready fo the party in these shoes and a dress I made myself and lo and behold my cousin exclaimed over and over again how ridiculous y shoes were; how ridiculous the feather at the hem of my dress were.Yup, it must've been a compliment! I was quite steamed before I had the where with all to decide I was a bit more clever than the average bear! XO

  23. Hi Cassandra,
I would be interested in collaborating with you on Coco & Kelly. Would love to send you my resume but I can't seem to find an actual e-mail address on your site. I am Managing Editor at louloumagazine.com based in Montreal. Can you send me your email or can you follow me on Twitter so that I can direct message you?

Thanks in advance for your kind reply.

'ridiqulous', as in my 84-yr old grandma spraining her ankle on her way to get a pedi in heels - 'b/c you always have to look put together'. hellz yeah! no flats for that one - ever!

    miss her...
