There was a time in my life when it wouldn't be surprising to see me spending a Sunday working on a little home project. I used to have hours to devote to making over thrift store finds, creating art for my walls, or even attempting to sew pillows. (I said attempting.)
Unfortunately, with the crazy schedule I keep these days, these projects keep being pushed to the wayside. But - just like everything else in life - when something is a priority, you find a way make it happen! So, when it came to finishing my apartment up, I finally made time for all the projects I'd been putting off lately, including giving these stacking stools a little makeover...
See, a few weeks back Sherwin-Williams contacted me about getting involved in National Painting Week, and it seemed quite serendipitous timing! Even better, mother nature provided me with a sunny weekend, and my parents provided me with a garage, so really... there was no excuse. It was time to give these babies a facelift.
The stools have been kicking around my home for a few years now. I use them all over the apartment - as extra seating, a place to set glasses, and most frequently, to reach into my high cupboards and closets. They've been beat up a bit, and I really didn't like the dark wood stain anymore, so I decided it was time for an update!
I took them apart fairly easily, and sanded down each piece to create a smooth surface that would absorb the new paint. Then, I sprayed them with a white primer. Next, it was time to paint! I love a strong pop of red in a house, but I also thought, since these stools are meant to stack, that it would be fun to do two tones of red. The first is called Showstopper (gotta love that name!) and the more pink one is Cherry Jubilee. I used a brush and three coats of paint and patience (letting the second coat dry overnight before the last one went on) and they were ready to go!
You can see that the color difference is fairly subtle (it's a bit more obvious in person) but I love the way they turned out! In fact, I'm kind of motivated to add a third stool just so I can try out the other paint color I loved - Radish.
At the moment, they're stacked between my two camel chairs and I love the way they contrast the neutrals! I found these stools at Target, but I know that Ikea has some very similar ones, so their affordable price makes them a perfect candidate for a paint makeover. If you could do them in any color, what would you have picked? What project would you like to tackle as a part of National Painting Week?
I'm so excited to see what the other bloggers who are involved in this week picked for their projects, and what colors they chose to use! Next up tomorrow is one of my favorite ladies and stylists, miss Emily Henderson who always knows how to work in some good color. Be sure to check her out!
