Last year when I went off to Italy with my family for a few weeks, I asked for travel recommendations, books to load up on my kindle and movies for the ipad, and you all were so helpful! Well, one week from today I'll be heading to Iceland for a much shorter trip (only five days) but I'm still treating this as a serious vacation, sooooo...
Lay it on me! Have any of you been to Iceland? Any favorite shops, restaurants, sights to see? And how about books? Any great reads or movies I should be downloading? I'd love all your advice, friends!

I hate to admit it (since I'm totally lightyears behind everyone) but I just finished reading the first of the Hunger Games series and am COMPLETELY hooked. It's a simple read (perfect for vacation mode).
ReplyDeleteHave so much fun in Iceland! Naturally, you must go to the blue lagoon
Can't wait to hear all about it!
oooh you're so lucky!
ReplyDeleteIf you're in Reykjavik, go to Icelandic Fish & Chips. The batter is amazing and definitely the best fish and chips ever! x The Blue Lagoon is really quite something, and if we did it again my husband would definitely do a 4x4 tour on the glacier. Have a wonderful time! x
Owow sounds like a trip of a lifetime? Didn't one of the Bachelorettes visit Iceland one season?? So romantic!

I feel so much envy! I would love to go to Iceland.
ReplyDeleteI would suggest 'Shadow of the wind' by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, a mystery/thriller taking place in Barcelona. And for a movie, I really liked Fur with Nicole Kidman & Robert Downey Jr. Have a great trip
Hi! I'm actually from Iceland, and I would def recommend going to the Blue Lagoon! Then some really good restaurants are Tapashusid (its a new place down at the harbor in Reykjavik) it has really good tapas i love it ;) A restaurant called Grillamarkaðurinn in downtown Reykjavík is also really good + a restaurant called Fiskfélagið (it has the best fish... ) I would also recommend going for brunch in a restaurant called Nítjánda and is in one of the tallest buildings in Iceland (www.turninn.is) it has amazing view over Reykjavík ;)
ReplyDeleteI hope this helps! :)
Enjoy your stay!
Yay, I've been following your blog for a couple of years now but rarely comment, but now I have to because I'm also from Iceland ;)
ReplyDeleteYou should check out Design March, which is a annual festival celebrating Icelandic design (22.-25. March) http://www.icelanddesign.is/_/DesignMarch2012/2594
And perhaps buy a Farmers Market wool sweater http://farmersmarket.is/

What a neat trip! I hope you have a wonderful time! A book that I am almost finished with and LOVING is "Paris My Sweet" by Amy Thomas. Although it is a memoir about a place you are, well, not traveling to on THIS vacation, it is shaping up to be one of the most fun books I have ever read! You should definitely check it out. ;-)
ReplyDeleteLast year my husband and I almost went to Iceland and a writer from Bella Sugar highly recommended visiting this world class spa:

HAVE FUN!!
I also loved Blue Lagoon...but if you go make sure you pull your hair up! It took quite a few washes before my hair felt normal again. Don't let that deter you, it is a must see!
ReplyDeleteI'm of no help but just have to say...I'm SO jealous you're going to Iceland...absolutely my #1 travel wish list local...can't wait to hear all about your trip!
ReplyDeleteI went to Iceland in 2010 and LOVED it! I would go back in a second!!

I surprised myself by LOVING The Hunger Games so much. Great books. Fast easy reads and I can't wait for the movie to come out.
ReplyDeleteO and Iceland sounds awesome and random. Wish I could say that.

You have to go on The Golden Circle and to the Blue Lagoon. And try to go horseback riding - it's the best! And if you can, go out to a club on a weekend night - they're hilarious to watch. You wonder how the Jersey Shore made it's way to Iceland. Have a great trip!

Im an Icelander, how long are you staying? Are you going outside of Reykjavík?
ReplyDeleteRegards, Guðfinna
I went to Iceland exactly a year ago this time. We took a little road trip and loved seeing the glaciers and general geological wonders! One of my favorite things was taking a day trip from Reykjavik to go horseback riding. It may look cold, but it's definitely worth it! Also, they have a market on the weekends near the famous hotdog stand.

I LOVED Iceland and I know you will too. ENJOY!!!
ReplyDeleteI rarely comment even though i've been followong you for a long, long time.
ReplyDeleteI'm also from iceland and i agree with everything the other icelanders have said. If you're staying in Reykjavik you should really check out the art museums and on weekends there is a flea market called Kolaportid, if you go there i recomend buying dryed fish and flatbread (Selfoss flatbraud - its the best. Grillmarkafurinn is icelands best restaurant today (my boyfriend who works at a hotel hears it all the time), go to Fish Market for sushi at lunch time and brunch at Prikid or Landromat Cafe.
Ofcourse there is so much more amazing things you can do so enjoy!! :)
Ofcourse i spelled Grillmarkadurinn wrong..
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a great time! Lookign forward to reading about your icelandic adventures...
ReplyDeleteI'l like to go to Iceland! It's a wonderful savage country but it's at my opposite i live in Australia!
