As someone who has been blogging for nearly five (eeek!) years, it's hard for many ideas you hear at conferences like these to feel new. Especially if you're the type who makes an effort to reach out and have continuous conversations with others about blogging, business, strategy, technology, social media, marketing and branding. (Which will be my first tip to those of you who didn't attend - if you're not having these conversations - do it.)
But if there was one thing I needed to hear, it went something like this:

As my life has been more and more consumed with to-do lists and travels and always feeling like I've got to be ahead of the game, the less I actually feel like I'm getting anything done. I put off big ideas because so many small ones need to happen first. I stop myself from moving forward on things because I feel like they have to be perfect.
So as I sat there listening to Jordan, Kelly, Nicole and Maggie - a group of women I have great respect for - speak about their own blogs and experiences on their panel, the one thing that stuck with me was this: Don't put off good ideas. Don't be afraid to try new things and fail. Don't wait until they're perfect. JUST. DO. IT.

Whaaaaat? That it? Yes. That's it. I mean, hiring an intern or two might be extremely helpful, but seriously, I need to just DO things. To avoid measuring myself against others, to remember that my own voice is what got me here, and to stop letting my never-ending inbox overwhelm my brain.

Moral of the story: Nobody else is going to do it all for you, but the nice thing is we all have hundreds (maybe even thousands?) of people that are going to be there to support and push us to get there. While the design blog community has definitely changed and grown in the past five years, one thing I realized this past weekend is that it's still a community of people who wants to see each other succeed.
Of course, there were lots of other little tidbits I got out of the conference, and I'll be sharing some resources and ideas from my own panel later this week, but for now, I'm motivated! Which means... I'm outta here. I've got some things to get done today!

ReplyDeleteI completely identify with your sentiment, " I put off big ideas because so many small ones need to happen first. I stop myself from moving forward on things because I feel like they have to be perfect." You've done so much already girl, keep gettin'er dun! I'm trying to do the same:)
ReplyDeleteThat is great advice - exactly what I needed to hear today!
ReplyDeleteThis post is so helpful! I'm so glad I stumbled upon it. Happy Tuesday!

ReplyDeletemy thoughts exactly! perfectly put!
ReplyDeleteIf we wiat for everything to line up perfectly in the universe...well we know the folly of that. Sometimes though I tend to think if I get one more sponsor lined up etc..
ReplyDeleteIt is the sheer action that gets the proverbial ball going and gathering more momentum along the way!

ReplyDeleteThis seems to be the common take away from Alt. It's been really encouraging to read how motivated people are to go for their big ideas. Maybe it's time I make the leap!

Thank you for making your "take home message" so short but powerful.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing! I'm a baby blogger and definitely needed a good kick in the butt to force me out of my comfort zone. The inspiration is much appreciated!

ReplyDeleteGreat post! I support you sista! I agree, you have to do for yourself what others will not.

Very inspiring because you said it best that you should just do it because you are in charge of your destiny. Sometimes I put off things too because I don't want to fail but this year I've been doing good about getting things done.
ReplyDeleteCassandra, It is so great to hear your perspective on Alt as I consider you to be in that group of veteran bloggers, setting the path for the design and blogging community. I look forward to your Alt recaps!

ReplyDeleteIf you have time to stop by my way, I would appreciate any input you have!
Thank you for the great words of wisdom today- I too tend to want to "wait" on big ideas, but when I think about it, I really have no idea what I'm waiting for.
ReplyDeleteAs a new blogger, I appreciate the wisdom!

There's something about going to a conference like Alt, and coming home and saying: let's DO THIS! It was great to meet you; your panel rocked! I'm excited to see what's in store for you :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for this inspiring little recap. I wish I could have attended Alt...but juggling a home renovation and 2 little boys...it just wasn't happening.
ReplyDeleteThank you for encouraging me to take the ideas that are percolating....and just do something with them.
Hope you get lots done today!
xo Elizabeth
Yes! Love, love, love this!
ReplyDeleteThank you for this words of encouragement!!! We all need to hear them all the time to constantly remind us to keep going. Many blessings to you and good luck on your big ideas and projects.
ReplyDeleteIt's what we all need to hear, I believe. Thanks for sharing this message with us. I saw something on TED recently that we get a release of endorphins from sharing our ideas with others that can impede our progress. We feel so good talking about things we don't actually get around to executing these great ideas. The point was: talk less, do more. It really hit home with me, as I'm a huge ideas person.
ReplyDeleteOh so very well said! Thanks for that. I needed that today.
ReplyDeleteJodi
Amazing quotes, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI needed this more than you could know. Nothing is ever going to be "perfect" enough in my eyes. I need to quit planning and start doing.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad to see this post on your blog and I am excited to see where the new year takes you. You're right - you have been at this for a long time. I'm excited to see you excited about "what's next" and for you to start being bold in your blogging again (instead of phoning it in with the same old). One thing i would love to read more about: you! Who are you? What are you up to? What projects are you working on? I used to subscribe but don't anymore (I check in though!) because I don't get enough "connection" with your voice anymore. We are all excited to see things shake up around here - especially since you are one of the "originals!"
ReplyDeleteThat is so true and basic and lovely and simple. Thanks Lady.
ReplyDeleteKacie
Like, wow... I just love this post!
ReplyDeleteThis point hit home for me as well at ALT. Here's to getting it all done! Even if it's not perfect :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for this post, it's so true and good to be reminded of it. I am an expert at having projects in my head, but pushing them until "tomorrow". But you are right, why not just do it. Very nice to read your post with morning coffee, feel like having a productive day :-)

ReplyDeleteThanks for the little bit of inspirational blogging stuff I needed for the day. I am outa here to lists to write work to do.

Love this post, Cassandra! So encouraging to know that even YOU feel overwhelmed by the inbox and surge of inspiration that floods us like a tidal wave. Sue (TheZhush) posted something similar last year, and everyone felt the same. "Just do it!" Don't worry about perfection or failure. When I first started blogging (right before we met at the La Cienega Elle Decor thing!) it seemed to be such a small community that being heard, relevant and original wasn't so daunting; then I started to measure myself against everyone else. As a crazy perfectionist I slacked off when I felt I just couldn't "keep up." I'd feel crushed whenever a big idea that I'd had floating around my head was swiftly executed by some chick who clearly had her act way more together than I did! But then I read this (which shot straight to my heart): IMPERFECT ACTION IS BETTER THAN PERFECT INACTION! I thought, so true. I can only do what I can do and if it's posting once a month, or building my businesses slowly, it's better than nothing at all. If I find something I made, designed, posted wasn't so perfect or original after all, at least it was new to someone out there. Reminding myself of that quote every day has pushed my business so far forward (okay, maybe not my blog) that I'm finally enjoying the journey (and seeing the prize closer in sight!). I just had a designer friend say to me,"Oh, I could never do [that]..." I said, yes you can, Just DO IT!
ReplyDeleteAnon -- I really appreciate your comment because I feel the same way. It's something I struggle with - to keep my voice in here while juggling an insane schedule - something I've never had to do before the last couple of years. It's hard to do it all, which is why I've had to add contributors, and I fully admit it's the BEST thing I could have done. But posts like this make me realize that when I do put myself out there a little more, I get a lot back (and I'm not just talking comments, I'm talking interaction, feedback, conversation, and support!). So, from here on out, more of me. I promise.
ReplyDeletethank you for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteCass - anon #1 again here. Glad to hear it! I can only imagine how swamped you must be but you are SO right: "when I put myself out there, I get a lot back." What a wonderful lesson. yes yes yes!
ReplyDeleteWhat's your advice to someone who wants to grow readership on their blog? I am so passionate about blogging but reaching people has been hard.
ReplyDeleteWonderfully said. I am feeling in the same boat right now with everything I got going on in my life. Thanks for sharing :)

Solid advice. Thank you for the reminder that action is required to achieve success! xox
