Recently, a client and I were discussing window treatments and in homage to her warmer climate, I was encouraging adding some bamboo shades and maybe some woven stools to the space. Understandably, it can be difficult to envision adding elements associated with beach homes or tropical escapes into traditional home decor. So, when I found this little 'office' area via House & Home, I had to save it as the perfect example.
What do you think? Does it feel too contrasted, or do you like the mix of traditional and tropical? The addition of the blue rug is another great element - bringing ocean hues indoors. I'm not sure that's the exact chair I would have chosen, but I do like the idea...
I love the mix. The windows are beautiful and the glass bottles look great with the mix.

Looks great- I hope she goes for it! I love the look of bamboo shades paired with curtains- it adds wonderful texture to the space. I have always loved blending styles too, when it comes to interior design! :)
ReplyDeleteI almost consider bamboo shades to be a neutral! They don't convey too much "tropical" to me anymore - they are also stunning on a black wall, so warm, and the texture really pops.
ReplyDeleteLove the bamboo look. Kori xoxo
ReplyDeleteit's gorgeous (i'm saving the pciture), and i'm quite the fan of bamboo shades:

ps- i sued the exact pottery barn curtain panels shown in the photo in a project this past summer- quite stylish for a great price.
To me it feels perfectly harmonious..not contrived at all...absolutely love that rug..how beautiful are the blues! thanks for sharing this lovely room..would love to have you visit my blog more often! xx meenal
ReplyDeletei love the curtains and the rod!
ReplyDeleteI love the mix, but I'm with you... I would have chosen a different chair. Maybe a Lucite chair? I think I'd like the chair to be less of a focal point and to focus on the great lines in the desk. But that's just me =)
ReplyDeleteFunny, I don't think of woven wood shades as tropical anymore, as they seem to have become mainstream in even traditional design. I have a traidtional home with some modern twists, and I have them in my family room and master. I hope she goes for it. This image is great inspiration and is not at all a stretch. After all, the British Colonials incorporated woven woods into their West Indies style very beautifully and successfully and that was a good long time ago. It's classic and gorgeous in my book! :)
ReplyDeleteLove this! - always think crisp black and white contrasts beautifully with warm, natural materials.
ReplyDeleteI love the mix! I am always getting requests for coastal elements and I'm in DC - you don't get much more traditional than that! Great pic. Thanks for sharing, Joanna
ReplyDeletecarol, i completely agree! and you're right - it's that west indies type of feel, isn't it? i absolutely love.
ReplyDeleteThe curtain/shade combination is divine. Especially with that black trim on the curtains. Spot on!
ReplyDeletei love the floor length white drapes and that blue rug!! looks like a similar one I got in morocco!

ReplyDeleteLove the curtains and bamboo shades together! I agree though, don't know about the chair -- especially with that desk.

Love! I wonder who made the curtain rods, they are hard to find for a bay window. I have one in my kitchen and used the modern rod from pottery barn... finials/lack there of can be tricky. If anyone knows more rods for bays, I'd love to hear! xoxo Shelli from alamode
ReplyDeleteThe bamboo shades really set the tone ... so sweet!

THAAANK YOOOUUU!!! I have been agonizing over using bamboo shades in my own home and was afraid that they might look too college apartment (because--truth be told--they're the only window treatments I had at the time), but this image demonstrates it perfectly, and now I'm loving the idea of mixing it in with my cream and navy color scheme!
ReplyDeleteThat is the perfect example! I love the bright airy feel with the bamboo shades and sheer curtains. Just beautiful.
ReplyDeletetraditional meets tropics! I always use this phrase to describe my dad's furniture in their marketing. A tempting dance between handsome hardwoods and exotic seagrass! A little romance always helps ;)
ReplyDeleteYesssssssss I love it. And so easy to add a black edge to store-bought drapes. The modern lamp adds a wonderful infusion of modernity. And i personally LOVE the chair, it's also one of the best parts of the room...
