ROOM OF THE WEEK 8.5

Being a pretty glammy girl, I have a feeling I would be challenged quite a bit as a designer if I were ever requested to decorate a bachelor pad. So, I've been focusing lately on studying decor that I think appeals to the boys in the bunch - and this room by Tommy Smythe happens to be one of my favorites...

So, guys (if you're out there) what do you think? Could you live with this? Could you love this? And ladies - if this were your living room, could you relate to it? Personally, looking at all the pieces separately I can honestly say I'd be drawn to every one of them! What makes it seem a bit more on the masculine side to me is simply the lack of softness in texture, shape and color.  The chairs are my favorite for that reason - they're probably the piece I relate to the most in here. There is a certain Ralph Lauren goes to London quality here with the stronger accents and hints of Americana mingling with classic antiques. But the best part may be the amount of light pouring into this apartment! It's so incredibly fresh. What are your thoughts?

  5. I think this is classic & beautiful. Only two things I'd worry about longer term...having to dust all that stuff on the coffee table, and keeping that couch WHITE in a bachelor pad! :)

  8. Love it and the color palette. I think I would live with it more in a family room or den.

I agree with another commenter who said I might get sick of this very soon because it's a bit busy. I'd love it for a while though. That said, I don't think many heterosexual men would appreciate this decor.

  14. I think it's a great room!
I also think the hermes blanket and most of the stuff on the coffee table would be lost on a bachelor!

  15. I think the room is perfect! I would agree though... man + white couch=new couch in 2 months! The humidor will keep the men happy!

  16. I think it's a great room, although the amount of artwork on the walls would perhaps be a bit much for me every day (great to look at here, though). The thing that gives it a feminine touch is, to me, the amount of detail - a more masculine room might have fewer ornaments - it's a wonderful balance!

  18. I've been needing some inspiration pour les hommes! I'm designing my boyfriend's bedroom and there's a major dearth of sources targeted to men. Thank you, thank you! Have a great weekend.

  19. I really like this space - a bit more accessorized than I would go for, but beautiful nonetheless.

I also think this is something my husband could appreciate - black and white, beautiful dark woods, deep accent colours. He could buy in, I think. (Except for the white couch. It would be brown and leather, my friends - for his taste, and my messiness.) :)

Love, love, love everything about the room (especially the "salon" wall). The only thing I don't like is the Hermes blanket on the sofa. I see Hermes blankets-oh-so-casually-draped over so many "Elle Decor" sofas that I think it has become an interior design cliche (sort of like having the book "I Married Adventure" on your coffee table)...

  21. love this apt! The brunschwig fabric on the wing chairs is so fabulous - I considered using it in my own place I love it so much!

True it's not your average bachelor pad but Tommy's tastes are more sophisticated than most men, so seeing an Hermes throw and white sofa are not the least bit surprising...

As a whole, yes, this is a killer pad for a sophisticated but young and cool man. Brass lamps and black lampshades, wing chairs and the couch and table with clean squared-off lines all work well in this regard. The room is actually reminiscent of my own (confirmed) bachelor pad. Thanks for posting!

This represents pure CANADIAN design influences. Living with nostalgic british and american furnishings done right. Take note Ralph Larren. Tommy rocks.
