Michael Smith Tapped to Decorate White House

I just LOVE a little inside scoop, and this is a good one!

Domino has just reported that designer Michael Smith has been tapped to design the White House interiors for the Obamas. Seriously? I cannot WAIT...

His style is classic perfection, and I think he will do quite an amazing job in keeping things somewhat traditional while making some much needed updates!

Domino
’s editor in chief, Deborah Needleman said of the Obamas’ choice, “It will be exciting to see Michael Smith’s great talent for making grand spaces intimate and livable at work in the White House... (he) has the right amount of reverence for the past and faith in the future that will hopefully allow the rooms to reflect both the history of our nation and the executive mansion and the change and progress that the Obamas want to bring to America.”

I mean, if the man can do this to the smallest guest room ever... just think of what he can do to the White House! (Don't you just love the oversized grey toile-inspired walls ?) Check out the full story right here on Domino.

This is going to be Fantastic! I don't remember such a big name designer decorating the white house in a long time. When my friends the Clinton's were in the White House, Kaki Hockersmith of Little Rock, also a friend, had the honor! I can't wait to see the photos from Michael's interpretation of the most famous house in America!!

I am so intrigued to see what he does- he is so classic, but he's got a twist... you know there's never anything expected or tired in his designs. I wonder how long we'll have to curiously wait!!!

what great info, I've been compiling images of the white house under various presidents like kennedy and reagan on Bloomacious - the white house now is so staid and sort of blah conservative. This should be interesting!

Wowowow! I don't know who's luckier? Them having such a great decorator or him decorating their place?

Oh, good. He's wonderful, I've never seen anyone do classic quite like he does. I can't wait to see what he comes up with.
Thanks for posting!

I really like his work, though it's not my typical style. Thanks for sharing. I saw it in the paper after you posted it, so you were the news leader. :)

I have to admit, I am pretty bugged. While it would be awesome to get some updated style into the white house, now is not the time to spend all that money on something so frivolous. The economy is in sad, sorry shape, and I think our tax dollars need to go toward something better...like the citizens and the economy perhaps. Is this a forewarning of poor spending to come? Disappointing...

anon, i think you make a very valid point. from what i have seen and heard of michael's work, i know that he has the ability to mix high and low end products to create his signature look, and i hope that he takes this approach to the white house with him - an approach that michelle obama also likes to take in her wardrobe!

i also think that white house or not, recession or no, i would want to personalize my space and breathe a little new life into my new home. the tradition of having a designer in the white house is one that i think should continue if only for that reason! hopefully they'll stick mostly to personal quarters and worry about the rest as the economy picks up ;)

I thought the Obamas might use this opportunity to spotlight some of the very talented African-American designers like Darryl Carter or Sheila Bridges, but I do think it will be great to see someone with a little bit of modernity take on the White House! It is so staid and unapproachable. Though he's probably just doing the private quarters?

jill, you're right, i think he only does private quarters, and maybe a few other small parts of the house.
